The existing Hilltop Commons expresses the strong, iconic architecture of the 1960’s. This renovation works respectfully within that framework, complementing the architecture with contemporary upgrades. Design goals were to add a more human feel to the dining experience and to celebrate the cooking and serving of meals. These goals were met with a new marché servery, outdoor dining terrace, new entrance lobby, warm lighting, colorful interiors, and new materials and displays.

The approach to and circulation within the dining room and servery were also improved. An entrance lobby added at the northwest corner invites traffic from the new Recreation Center across the street, while a new elevator, glazed entrance, and terrace on the upper floor improve internal circulation. Reorganization of the building allows the campus convenience store and café to stay open for late night operation while the rest of the building stays securely closed.
