| Construction cost: $11.3 Million Area: 750,000 sf Completed: 1999 2000 AIA National Honor Award for Architecture Built on the site of the 19th century Sprague Electric Company in the Berkshire mountains, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) is the largest contemporary art museum in the United States. The 13-acre complex includes 28 buildings linked by a series of covered bridges and totals 750,000 square feet. Since its opening, the local unemployment rate has fallen by almost twelve percent. With this project, Bruner/Cott faced the architectural challenge of using outdated, historic buildings to create a new, vibrant museum that would revitalize its surrounding community. Forsaking the tradition of self-consciously separating new architecture from old, we decided to freely integrate the two, also making no distinction between creation and completion, nor visual and performing art. Our work at MASS MoCA challenges basic assumptions about architecture and art display. |
