The Hayden Building is an 1875 commercial structure designed by the celebrated Boston architect, H. H. Richardson. Historic Boston, Inc. hired Bruner/Cott to design and coordinate the rehabilitation of the building’s external envelope that had been badly damaged in a major fire.
Restoration and reconstruction work included the disassembly of dangerously weakened structural stonework; cast stone replacements of shattered brownstone lintels and columns from latex-derived molds, using undamaged stones from other parts of the building; brownstone cleaning; composite mortar repairs; and complete repointing. Mortar analysis by Building Conservation Associates helped match Richardson’s deeply pigmented red mortar joints. Window repairs and replacement conserved all intact frames and sashes. We also advised the owner on accessibility, egress, lateral stabilization and structural timber replacement.
Today, the Hayden Building has a sound exterior and a new mahogany storefront designed by Bruner/Cott and built by North Bennet Street School’s Preservation Carpentry students.
