he designs for the two new buildings at 20-21 Custom House Street are sensitive to the 19th and early 20th century context of Boston’s Historic Custom House District. The granite curtain wall on both buildings complements the granite and limestone construction of the district’s historic buildings. Window patterns and the creation of a three-story “piano nobile” on each building reinforce the contextual nature of the landmark site.
As part of the urban design improvements of the Historic Custom House District, Bruner/Cott also restored a series of historic Charles Bulfinch warehouses. Designed in 1805, the careful restoration renewed the buildings to their original appearance. The buildings now contain 14,000 square feet of retail and commercial office space, and are connected to the 20 Custom House Street lobby.
