Bruner/Cott worked with the Committee to End Elder Homelessness (CEEH) preparing condition and feasibility assessments, design alternatives, and cost analysis to transform portions of the 1860 structure into housing for homeless elders. CEEH together with a coalition of agencies, and social service providers offer comprehensive outreach support and housing for homeless elders.

The Boston Aerated Bread Company built the original red brick and timber Italianate structure. Remaining portions of the building in Boston’s Historic South End Victorian District were donated by the Boston University Medical Center Hospital. The restoration of the original structure and a new, four story, steel frame addition compliment the existing facade and complete the historic streetscape. The Boston Landmarks Commission approved the design in 1995. The completed 41 unit apartment complex is seen as a catalyst for the renewal along the Washington Street Corridor — Boston’s Main Street for the New Century.

Responsible design can be beautiful, compliment the surrounding context and contribute to solving social problems. This project accomplishes this successfully.
