Construction cost: $2 Million
Area: 30,000 sf
Completed: 1989

Built as a gymnasium for St. Mary’s Church in the 1930’s, the original building had three floors, with a two-story gymnasium occupying the entire top floor. The facility was only marginally used for a decade.

In 1989, Bruner/Cott purchased the building and transformed it into a first-class modern office for their own use. A new doughnut-shaped third floor was inserted into the old two-story open space. A new 60-foot skylight allows light to penetrate within the center of the old 100’ x 100’ floor plate. The new third floor opens onto a two-story atrium furnished with 30-foot trees. At grade, the ground floor was raised to maximize parking and allow easy circulation between a new lobby and parking area. Windows that had been blocked up were reopened revealing a classic fenestrated elevation.

The interior is a first-class modern office building with large windows, exposed brick walls and steel trusses – a fascinating combination of old and new. Riveted steel trusses, covered for over 50 years, were exposed to liberate the interior space and create an office environment pleasing to the eye and adaptable to today’s changing office environment.
